Effective

SweepLoom is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0).

What MPL-2.0 means in practice

This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice and not a substitute for the license text. If they differ, the license wins.

  • You can use SweepLoom for any purpose, including commercially, and copy, modify and distribute it.
  • File-level copyleft. If you distribute a modified version of a SweepLoom source file, that file stays under MPL-2.0 and its source must be available. Your own files, combined in a “Larger Work”, can be under other terms.
  • Patents. Contributors grant a patent license for their contributions, which ends for anyone who brings a patent claim over the software.
  • No trademark rights. Section 2.3 of the license grants no rights in contributors' names, trademarks or logos. You may refer to SweepLoom truthfully, for example “based on SweepLoom”.
  • No warranty, limited liability. Sections 6 and 7: the software is provided “as is”.

SweepLoom consumes the MIT Weavatrix libraries; it does not vendor, fork or relicense them.

The Mac App Store edition

A sandboxed build of the desktop app is coming to the Mac App Store (it is in TestFlight testing and not on sale yet). Section 3.2 of the MPL-2.0 allows a compiled program to be distributed under different terms, as long as those terms do not limit your rights in the source code and you are told where to get it. So:

  • The App Store copy is licensed to you under Apple's Standard End User License Agreement. Purchases and refunds go through Apple.
  • The source code of that same app stays available under MPL-2.0 at github.com/Weavatrix/sweeploom, and Apple's terms do not reduce your rights in it. Settings → About in the app says so and links there.
  • The full edition, with every feature, stays free: build it from source.

Details are in section 5 of the Terms of Use.
